Most drawing classes focus on the polish/ finish, details, anatomy, steady/ held/ posed human forms. Even the 5-second gesture drawings are ‘held’ by those modelling. But these pretended stills don’t match the energy that comes from observing-drawing someone moving in real time and even experiencing it oneself.
As Norman MacLaren says “Animation is not the art of drawings that move but the art of movements that are drawn.” We see the same energy in the works of Glen Keane (Nephtali) and Ryan Woodward (Thought of you).
One such well documented class happened with UG students, Visual Communication, NID Vijayawada, AP, India. 12+ days of monkey business, undoing 12+ years of schooling. Not rote learning. Learning by observing, doing, being. Training eyes, hands, body, mind.
